I have a red brick fireplace that I want to remodel.?

It sets out about 4 feet. The first 3 feet is dry wall. The mantel is also held up by brick. I could just paint it all white and leave the mantel wood but I’m afraid that will leave it too bland. I want to keep the updating to a minimum. I don’t want to have to tear the brick or add any dry wall. Tile might work. I can’t really imagine it though. I’m really just looking for some suggestions that I may have not thought of or looked up already.

I had my old brick fireplace covered with stone, it cost less than a hundred and the stone mason had some left over Montana travestine with pink and blue veins in a white stone. I found my mason at the local tradesmen bar, and he was friendly and professional. Ask at the local masonry supply store for a local pro.
