Wood burning stove smoke?

I have a wood burning stove fireplace. I have cleaned and serviced it, and the main problem i am having is that when i light the starter log, smoke come out through the stove and fills the room up with smoke. I opened up the hatch and all the levers and still, it fills up the room. Once, the wood catches fire it stops, it is just the initial lighting, Is this normal?

when you start a fire there is always some smoke. you can help reduce the amount by placing a piece of newspaper in the chimney and lighting it. this will help make a draft and reduce the amount of smoke. you should also use smaller pieces of wood first and then work up. insure the wood is well seasoned
