I cannot deicide between a real log fire or a gas?

it will be the centerpiece of my new family room … I just do not know I ID wants ash and smoke spreading throughout the room. I never had any type of fireplace, so I really do not know. Similarly, grille, where the ash falls into the cellar seems a little scary to use a shovel to collect the ashes. but i dont want to spend more $ $ on gas bills with a gas. please help. thanks

I love fireplaces! My family had when I was growing up. And the first house with a property. But it is a big pain in the neck to buy and store records. They must be dry or they will not burn. Then you have to take them to the family room and get the fire to the paper, wood or fuel. If I had a servant, I would definitely have a fireplace! But now I have a gas fireplace, and it's great. I just turn on a switch and go. I enjoy a fire on a cold fall evening or in the spring for an hour or two, or even think about it. Burning wood waste energy, too … fire takes air from inside your house, so the hot air up the chimney several rooms. Chimey need to leave the open for several hours to let out the residual smoke, therefore continue to lose heat, even after going to bed. Talk to people who have wood fireplaces, and ask how often they actually use. When I had one, I used a lot the first year and then hardly ever after that.
