why does my cat lick the fireplace?

my cat during varying times of the day licks the stone fireplace (the outer covering for the gas fireplace)
the fireplace i heard was tennesse stone
yea a better diet is a good idea because the cats current weight is 20 pounds

How long has the cat done this? It’s completely possible that it’s missing something from its diet, and is now craving whatever it thinks its getting from the stone fireplace. I would recommend looking at the brand of food. Unfortunately, with cat food, you generally get what you pay for. Having seen the production facility, I’m personally fond of Iams and recommended it to all of my customers/patients when doing the Veterinary thing in the Army.

*heh heh* 20 lbs? Time to put kitty on the LEAN cat food. Maybe even time to start regulating how much/when he eats.

You will find that with a highly nutritious and well balanced food you can actually feed him LESS and he’ll still be much more healthy. You’ll even see less in the litter box since his body will be able to absorb more of it.
