How can I update an ugly fireplace surround?

The picture does not show the ugly green ceramic tiles around the fireplace with a mantelpiece mismatched. I know that I want to change the color of the mantel, either paint or get new wood to match the rest of the woodwork the room. It would be easy to cover if he was ugly tile around the fireplace, but extends into another small corner. I do not know what to put there. Is there any other idea of re-tiling the whole thing? Or is it the best idea? Any suggestions would be great! Thanks! Here is a picture: the lighting is dark, but gives a better idea: http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4/mustanglvr77/5163_102799132442_514512442_2483633.jpg

I buy molding gypsum for the fireplace that can be screwed into the frames and caulking, something along these lines http://www.mcmcinc.com/doorframes2.html After the panel on the tables with something like this http://www.infolink.com.au/odin/images/196359/Glosswood-Pre-Finished-Lining-Boards-the-green-alternative.jpg with liquid nails to stick it in the capping http://www.porta.com.au/matrix2.php?cat=Wall_Ceiling_Trim&pc=GD something like this if you use your head and purchases, so you could run $ 300 odd.
