How I can fix the fireplace?

I need help! … I have a fireplace, was once functional and then the last owner closed / sealed it with cement and painted it. I want to get a new marble mantle and put some stone / slate around (must look great!). BUT .. What I do about the central section that was closed? .. It looks horrible and I do not know what to do. "Maybe I can buy a chimney cover to cover dark enough? Do I have to paint? Any advice would be great. Thks! By the way, I am not looking to be functional .. and I am not looking to reopen it. Thks.
