Can you convert a gas fireplace back to a wood, by simply removing the insert??

I just moved into a big old farmhouse and I have a huge stone fireplace that has been converted to gas and has an insert in it. Now my question is can I just remove the insert and burn wood? I prefer wood, you get the crackling effect and it much more cost effective then propane.

It really depends on how the setup is done. If the fireplace was a wood burning fireplace to begin with (which it probably was), then you should be able to convert it back from a gas fireplace. You might want to call a fireplace professional in your area and see what they suggest. More than likely they’re the ones who converted it to gas, and can probably just as easily change it back. I imagine you would have to have the gas line capped off, the supply cut off to the line from the source (tank in your yard, or from nearby plant), and of course the gas logs removed.

You will have to call the local gas company to perform that part of the process. They may have to remove the gas lines running to the house from the supply, as well as into the house to the fireplace.
