replace fireplace surround

How do you remove a gypsum fireplace surround? I’m assuming it is glued to my concrete floors and the wall.?
This is a basic fireplace surround and not very attractive. I would like to remove it and replace it with wood and stone or tile facing.
I am pretty sure you can just put the new wood, tile or stone directly over the old fireplace surroundings. That is what I have always seen done on HGTV.

I would go into Home Depot and ask a professional first and have them tell you the best materials to use.
