Alternatives for heating oil?

I just called my oil company and was told the heating oil was 4.38 dollars a gallon, and about to rise again. They have a minimum consumption of 150 gallons. That cost me $ 657.00 and is not even enough to make me go winter. Crazy! We do not qualify for LIHEAP, but can not allow our own good. We are a family of five. I'm curious if anyone else is expected to high costs this winter and what, if any, alternatives being considered to heat your home. We have an electric fireplace and a little portable oil heaters filling. I think at this point power is a cheaper way to heat my house.

Hi Amy, costs are increasingly silly is not it. I have a run business in England Care Homes and there are three homes with heating oil. I'm looking at the ground heat pumps (which has been used in Sweden for 40 years) or conversion to natural gas (which is cheaper here in England). I realize that this is a very expensive solution in the short term but may be worth asking if any of the environment, etc. available grants to help with the cost?
