What is the most effective method to remove ash and soot from my outdoor fireplace?

I do not mean washing … I could imagine one on my own, and not really clean anyway. I just mean the elimination of all YUK it, after each fire. I tried to do with a small set collector … What a mess. Ash and soot flying everywhere, let alone that made a mess of the blade and brush. So I thought I had the best solution and use my wet / dry shop-vac. Yeah … This worked like a charm … BUT … the filter is so clogged now from the ashes … it is completely ceased working. So, how can I effectively clean my outdoor fireplace, the easiest way? And on that note … How do I clean the filter on my shop-vac

You can soak the filter car wash and water. The next time you clean the chimney, and put a paper bag over the filter and keep there with rubber bands. Now you can vacuum and when done just pull the paper bag.
