How do I know exhaust chimney safe?

I have a craftsman of the installation of gas pipe replacement and gas fireplace firplace also a gas kit from Lowe's, which are basically replacing the gas fireplace. The house was built in 1958 and eventually had a gas fireplace, but has not been used in years. The chimney is intact and rises to an opening. I had it checked by a chimney sweep and said he does not comply with the code for burning wood, as it is only a brick chimney, no steel insert. I wonder how can I find the exhaust gases of this new gas fireplace all up the chimney and will not return to the house? How do I know it is safe. Could I have my gas company does this prove?
