I have a wood burning fireplace in my apartment with gas heating. Is there a feasible way to board it up?

I have small children, and I also don’t want to incur the cost of getting firewood, not to mention finding somewhere to store the firewood. I really don’t want to be bothered with the upkeep since it would probably cost more to use than just running my gas heater this winter. How do you recommend I close it off so that I don’t lose any heat?

If it is a regular looking fireplace first close the flue/damper. Look up and make sure it is closed all the way. Then get a sheet of plywood to fit the opening. Now that is not very pretty. So you can have you kids decorate it with crayons, you can coat it with shelf paper, you can just paint it to go with the room, or you could cover it with fabric or paneling. Some lumber dealers will cut the wood to fit. You may need to add shelf brackets on the bottom to hold the plywood up if the plywood does not fit snugly.
