Heat gradient over a gas fireplace for electronics too?

I have a corner gas fireplace with a direct outside ventilation. I'm sure over the fireplace, behind the wall, there is a nominal amount of radiant heat, but I am considering cutting the wall to insert an integrated the platform for the cable box, receiver and DVD, which are mounted above my flat screen TV. Has anyone done something similar? If so, did you take precautions to isolate the platform? How much clearance is required between the lower platform and the fireplace? Am inviting disaster?
