How can I decorate the mantle economically and home to a brick fireplace with a full brick wall?

I've been reviewing sites decorating to try to get some ideas about how to decorate my fireplace mantle / hearth. Most images show light wood fireplaces color – not much with the dark brick. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I get a Nice mantle clock, a pair of candle sticks to put high on each side and perhaps sparsely growing plants.
