How to recover a stucco and brick fireplace surround?

I have a 1928 colonial. I have a wood burning fireplace the surround is mostly stucco with a border by the opening made out of brick. UGLY, so how to i recover it with tile. My main problem is that there is a difference in heights between the stucco and the brick. How do i level it to lay tile on it? thanks for any thoughts.
Harley. The problem is that there is 1/2 inch spacing that would weird if I just lay tile on top. The brick is only creating a 3 inch wide border, and I just hate the finish of the stucco. Is a right way to chisel the brick? I like to DIY. Is there a specific grout I should use since it is so close to a fire source? thanks

you could use a grinder and diamond blade and have someone hold the vacuum hose close to where the dust is coming off the blade…regular mortar will be fine there…
